Greetings food adventurers! Today we are visiting a 100% real place – Hillsdale Farmers’ Market in Portland, Oregon. I am a very big fan of farmers’ markets, and proud to be a supporter, sponsor, and community member of this one. The vendors have truly wonderful offerings. I created this berry cobbler recipe to highlight some of the beautiful berries in season right now and available at the market.

Supporting local food and farmers makes a huge difference to the community. Shopping at these markets builds community resilience. If you don’t know what to do with a veggie, the farmers have great ideas and are always happy to share their favorite tips.

A couple of things I love about this particular market: First is the POP Booth – this stands for “Power of Produce” – where the younger shoppers get to do fun kid activities while learning about fruits and veggies. Seeing so many kids involved at the market gives me hope for the future. The market also participates in the Double-Up-Food-Bucks program. This gives double the value for SNAP recipients to make food dollars go further and expand access to fresh foods. (Just ask at the info booth, they are super helpful!)

The best food starts with the best ingredients. I encourage every one of you to check out your local farmers’ markets, get to know your farmers, and eat with the seasons when fruits and vegetables are at the peak of flavor. It makes a world of difference. Shop local!

Hillsdale Berry Cobbler

Use any kind of berry in this versatile cobbler – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, marionberries, raspberries – even peaches! Mix and match as you like. Serve topped with whipped cream or iced cream for an extra special treat.

Equipment

  • 2-quart baking dish such as an 8×8" square

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups fresh* berries any kind, or a mix, cut to bite-size if they are large
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup rolled oats
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 4 Tbsp butter** MELTED

Instructions
 

  • Start the butter melting so it’s ready later, by putting it in a small saucepan on the lowest heat of a stove burner.
  • In a large bowl, mix sugar, flour, oats, and baking powder.
  • Beat the egg in a small bowl then add it to the dry ingredients. Mix together with a pastry blender or fork until all the dry ingredients are moistened. The mixture will be crumbly.
  • Spread berries in an 8” square baking pan (or other 2 quart baking dish).
  • Sprinkle topping over berries.
  • Pour melted butter evenly over the dry topping.
  • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
